Jazz Legend Al Jarreau Dead at 76

Just days after being hospitalized for exhaustion, the incomparable vocalist passed away in Los Angeles

ust days after announcing that he was retiring from touring after being hospitalized for exhaustion, legendary jazz singer Al Jarreau passed away Sunday morning in Los Angeles.

The singer’s manager, Joe Gordon, released a statement–which was shared with EBONY by reporter Darlene Hill–about the singer’s death.

Dear friends, family and colleagues,

Al Jarreau passed away this morning, at about 5:30am LA time. He was in the hospital, kept comfortable by Ryan, Susan, and a few of his family and friends.

Ryan and Susan will hold a small, private service at home, for immediate family only. No public service is planned yet, but I will inform you if that changes.

Ryan asks that no flowers or gifts are send to their home or office. Instead, if you are motivated to do so, please make a contribution to the Wisconsin Foundation for School Music, a wonderful organization which supports music opportunities, teachers, and scholarships for students in Milwaukee and throughout Wisconsin. Born and raised in Milwaukee, Jarreau’s unique singing style helped to make him one of jazz’s greatest vocalists. During college, where he received a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology, Jarreau performed with a local group called The Indigos before moving to San Francisco. There he hooked up with fellow jazz great George Duke to form a trio.

Inspired to pursue music full time, Jarreau moved south to Los Angeles, where he caught the eye of Warner Bros. talent scouts, who signed the singer to a recording contract. In Los Angeles, Jarreau’s career would take off after the release of his critically acclaimed debut album We Got By. In 1977, Jarreau would win his first of seven Grammy Awards for his live album, Look to the Rainbow.

Dubbed “the voice of versatility” by the Chicago Tribune, Jarreau released 16 studio albums, a host of live albums, and several compilations. The consummate performer, Jarreau constantly toured the world, dazzling audiences with his magical voice.

Jarreau passed away at a Los Angeles hospital early Sunday morning. The singer leaves behind his wife, Susan, and his son, Ryan. He was 76.

President Obama Orders 10-Year ‘Deep Dive’ into Election Hacking

And he wants the intelligence community to deliver it before he leaves office.

The White House has requested the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to present a full review of the cyber and espionage activity aimed at United States elections, going back to 2008.

“This is something the president wants done under his watch,” Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz told reporters at the White House on Friday.

The probe will not be specifically focused on Russia. For example, experts have blamed China for election hacks in 2008 against the Obama and McCain campaigns. However, the intelligence community’s assertion that Kremlin-backed actors led hacking activities against the most recent election would be included in the review.

“This will be a deep dive,” Schultz said. But he added that the effort was “not an effort to challenge the outcome of the election” and would not call into question the election results. “This will be a challenge for the next administration.”

The announcement comes after lawmakers across party lines called for more information to be made public about Kremlin-backed activities aimed at destabilizing the United States presidential election.

This week, Democrats and independents on the Senate Intelligence Committee, led by Ron Wyden, D-Ore., sent a letter to the president, saying, “We believe there is additional information concerning the Russian Government and the U.S.election that should be declassified and released to the public. We are conveying specifics through classified channels.”

In a separate statement, Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said, “Interference in America’s democracy and our electoral process by any outside power is unacceptable. I commend the President for undertaking a comprehensive review of meddling in the election by Russia. Similarly, I strongly believe Congress must play a proactive role in this investigation.”

And in an implicit reply to president-elect Donald Trump, who this week once again rejected the consensus IC view that Russia meddled in the election he won, Warner added, “As the incoming Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, I know that one of the primary missions of the intelligence professionals in this country is to render their best professional judgment, regardless of political considerations.”

Republicans, too, have said that they intend to push the issue. “I’m going after Russia in every way you can go after Russia. I think they’re one of the most destabilizing influences on the world stage. I think they did interfere with our elections, and I want Putin personally to pay the price,” Senator Lindsey Graham, R-SC, said Wednesday in a CNN interview.

In the House, Democrats pushed legislation that called for a formal probe. The effort was led by Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif.

“We are deeply concerned by Russian efforts to undermine, interfere with and even influence the outcome of our recent election,” Schiff said in a letter.

Schultz said that the review was unrelated to Congressional pressure. “We’ve received requests from Congress for briefings on this. We’ve been briefing them on this. We’re happy to go through the process to figure out” if more material can be declassified, he said.

On October 7, the office of the Director of National Intelligence and Department of Homeland Security issued a joint statement underlining their view that the “Russian Government directed the recent compromises of e-mails from US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations.The recent disclosures of alleged hacked e-mails on sites like DCLeaks.com and WikiLeaks and by the Guccifer 2.0 online persona are consistent with the methods and motivations of Russian-directed efforts.”

German intelligence agencies have also on Thursday said that they have seen increased influenced operation activity from Russian actors, possibly connected to the planned 2017 Federal Election. We see aggressive and increased cyber spying and cyber operations that could potentially endanger German government officials, members of parliament and employees of democratic parties,” said Hans-Georg Maassen, head of Germamy’s BfV intelligence agency.

All this provides seems to suggest that the White House and the intelligence community are sitting on much more information linking Kremlin-backed actors to activities meant to destabilize the United States electoral process.

Speaking before an intelligence group on October 20, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper hinted at having more information than has come out publicly. “That’s one of the reasons we waited for as long as we did to make the statement, was to ensure that we had sufficient evidence both forensic and otherwise, to reach the conclusion we reached as articulated in the statement. I don’t think I need to say anything more about it, other than the fact the statement speaks for itself. It was mainly addressed to the American electorate, not to any foreign nation-state.”

Much evidence has already been made available to the public through private cyber companies, primarily and most importantly CrowdStrike, the company that DNC called to investigate the breach of its networks. In a June 15 blog post, CrowdStrike averred that Russian-state backed actors stole private email information related to the DNC.

The ultimate aim of those activities, whether to elect Donald Trump, or simply to test influence operation capabilities, is mostly a matter of speculation.

* If Mayor Rahm Emanuel led a “cover up” of this heinous crime in order to save his candidacy to be re-elected…
* If Supt. McCarthy was in on a police cover up and knows information was tampered with...
* If the Aldermen (City Council) voted on a $5 Million settlement in hopes of “hushing” this situation for whatever reasons and now say they were "misled" but voted without doing proper due diligence knowing a black youth was executed by a police officer (particularly a white police) during an already tumultuous time with community/police tensions…
* If the Black Caucus allowed this to happen on their watch and participated in the settlement vote without due diligence or demanding to see the video before a settlement…
* If we all rush to judgment regarding the caucus and all city leaders involved without asking the necessary questions in order to get facts...
* If Faith, Civic and Community leaders or “activist" knew LaQuan was shot 16 times LAST YEAR but are just now “expressing outrage”…
* If any of us waited “to see” the video before we felt a black man being shot 16 times was flat out WRONG…
* If there is a Burger King video that was “edited by police” and the Manager & Staff are just now saying something about it one year later…
* If any of us didn’t even know this situation ever took place, we are clearly "out of the loop" and our ears aren’t connected to our own community enough to address these kinds of injustices…
* If it took us 400 days to FINALLY go and "pay tribute” at the site where LaQuan was killed…
* If the so called “outraged” Faith & Community Leaders are now chasing the media cameras to talk about “injustice” but knew about this case BEFORE this video was released…
* If people (especially black) leaders, preachers, politicians, residents, citizens, etc., knew this tape existed but sat back while a “white" reporter fought to get it released and few to no blacks helped him…
* If we try to stop young, passionate, angry young people from marching wherever they want to march and protest who SHOULD be angry and SHOULD demonstrate, in peaceful and non-destructive ways…
* If the older generation of Chicagoans have not taught the younger generation how to properly protest AND effect change through policy, legislation and voting…
* If we are ONLY "social media activist" and commentators who only “like" or post comments and “share” fact or fictional snippets who say “they SHOULD protest” but won’t join in…
* If those who didn’t VOTE, still won’t vote…
* If the church and the black community is going to continue to ignore #MentalHealth in our community...
* If we are going to blame ALL police for what a few bad police do...
* If we preachers have in fact become media whores but don't open our churches to provide life saving programs and Safe Havens (especially when no money is involved)...
* If Anita Alvarez and the States Attorney's office didn’t do their job, purposely delayed the video release or was part of a cover up…
* If any reporters knew about this incident, (especially black reporters) and didn’t make it a priority to tell this story continually BEFORE now, you know, kinda like#CarolMarin did (another WHITE reporter)…
* If those of us who stood during the Video Release Press Conference don’t work to ensure that City Leaders are accountable and won’t be allowed to let this happen in the future…
* If police officers who were on the scene, etc., stayed quiet, altered evidence and have not called this action wrong publicly, they too owe LaQuan and every gang banger and apology because they too have a “no snitching” oath that they operate by...
* If none of us are asking why LaQuan had PCP in his system, what led to this, and how to prevent other youth from going down this same road…
* If Faith-Based and Community-Based Organizations are not working diligently to strengthen programs and find resources to save our youth…
* If black and non-black people still don’t see why Community & Police Relations are still strained…
* If non-black people don't yet understand the pain of the African American community and don't care enough to try and find out...
* If we allow racist idiots to pour gasoline on this fire with their social media comments and make racial tensions even worse...
* If those who don’t live in poverty stricken, resource limited and violent neighborhoods don’t get involved…
* If the media only reports on the negative things in black communities and not the positive things that happen more often...
* If you are mad about who killed a black youth but are not helping to keep other black youth alive by mentoring or sowing into programs…
* If the Governor and legislators of Illinois don’t realize every “program they cut” represents 150 programs we will have to print, these are called "OBITUARIES"…
* If my black community is only going to get mad when a black person is killed by whites but not be just as angry when blacks kill other blacks...
* If the government, philanthropist, the wealthy community and corporate America won't invest into underserved communities...
* If black people are going to go into debt this week for Thanksgiving and #BlackFriday Shopping but won't spend a dime to invest in youth programs for young black people... which is such a damn shame.....

If ANY of us fit ANY of the above categories, then NONE of us should be casting stones and ALL of use need to be held accountable!!! Clearly more than this video is 400 DAYS LATE and we ALL owe LaQuan and this generation an apology. And even after we all apologize, we owe this generation and the next A PROMISE OF CHANGE that won’t allow this to happen again! Now if you won’t help make that happen, KEEP YOUR APOLOGY, because you ARE SORRY and you’ll be sorry again, when the next LaQuan situation happens and is exposed.
